Trần Tế Xương là đại biểu xuất sắc của dòng thơ trào phúng trong văn học Việt Nam. Tiếng cười trong thơ Trần Tế Xương vừa dí dỏm, hồn nhiên, vừa xót xa, bất lực, mang dấu ấn thời đại. Đặc biệt là tiếng cười chính bản thân mình. Thơ tự trào Tú Xương đã dựng lên bức chân dung tự họa thể hiện nét tính cách tài hoa, ngông nghênh mà bất lực đau đớn trước thời cuộc của nhà thơ. Đó là tiếng cười tự giải thoát bản thân, phủ nhận xã hội đương thời mang tâm sự chung của lớp nhà nho cuối mùa.
Tran Te Xuong is an outstanding representative of satirical poetry in Vietnamese literature. The laughter in his poetry is both witty, unaffected, sorrowful, and impotent, bearing the marks of the times. Especially, it is his sarcastic laughter that laughs at himself. Tu Xuong's self-satirical poetry has erected a self-portrait showing not only a talented and egoistic person, but full of pain and impotence with the circumstances of the times. It is the laughter of self-liberation and denying contemporary society with the general sentiments of the Confucian class in the late Middle Ages.
